About: Timely News (2016) was composed for KCSS (https://soundcloud.com/kcss-podcasts) student podcast, Central Valley Politics, as their fall semester intro and outro theme.  The short theme is a musical emulation of the surrounding machine sound effects and atmosphere in a news room. The beginning of the piece starts with a relaxed melody (reporter) going about its own way. Nothing new, nothing too exciting. It isn't’ until the tempo of the piece begins to ascend to an urgent and on-edge tempo that the melody (reporter) begins to receive important news. From there, the beat settles in with a sense of heartbeat or adrenaline rush. These effects essentially represent the high pressure of completing a news story as quickly as possible. The counter-melody represents the news being read, as if it is being read by the voice of the reporter. The melody from the beginning comes back again with an on-edge feeling, as if the reporter is starting to get into reporting the news. The effects in the background create a typewriter and murmur sound effect. It’s more about the noise and the extreme chatter that create the context of completing the news story. These sound effects are later joined by three bell sounds, representing more news coming in from a teletype. The piece finally ends with an abrupt ending designating the completed work and the timeliness from retrieving to sharing news to an audience.

More to come!
